Bright yellow and blue walls, healthy green plants dangling in the sunny windows, daily specials scribbled on the chalkboard, and biscuits. Perfect, non-greasy, delicious biscuits. What more could you want in a southern Sunday brunch spot? Early Girl Eatery has been one of my favorite Asheville dining establishments for all those reasons and more. Expect to fight the crowds for Sunday brunch, but you can take advantage of free coffee in the lobby or take a stroll to the nearby shops while you wait.
Healthy Options
You can order all the southern classics – shrimp and grits, biscuits and gravy – but they also have comfort foods with healthy twists. Take the Early Girl Benny. Usually eggs benedict is veggie-deficient and drowning in hollandaise sauce, but Early Girl’s version comes with avocado, spinach, and tomato gravy. There are several good options for vegetarians and vegans (vegan granola, tempeh, tofu, lots of veggies and beans) and gluten-free options are noted on the menu.
My Picks
Vegan Tofu Scramble with mushrooms, spinach, and a biscuit on the side
Early Girl Benny (eggs benedict, healthy style)
Black Bean and Sweet Potato Cakes
Veggie Sampler (with beets, collards, mac and cheese, or any of the daily specials)

I have yet to try the Early Girl Eatery when in Asheville, mainly because I love Tupelo Honey Cafe so much. But I will give it a go next visit.
I love Tupelo Honey, too! But I have to say, Early Girl is in the running to become my new favorite. It’s totally worth a try.
